The Lionel New York Central Freight Set steam locomotive is 0-8-0. Steam locomotives are categorized by their wheel arrangement. The two dominant systems for this are the Whyte notation and UIC classification.
So what does this mean for us? For most of the English speaking world the Whyte notation was used to identify steam locomotives. Each set of wheels were represented with a number. Such as 2-10-2 given to the “Santa Fe” type built by the Santa Fe Railway. The names were given according to region and sometimes for politics the designation was informal.
In European non English speaking countries the UIC classification was used. This designation was for consecutive pairs of wheels or axles and the tag wheels or non-drive wheels were given a capital letter designation. For example the UIC designation 2-C-1 was equivalent to a Whyte 4-6-2 designation.

Great, durable starter set. Pieces are solid and include everything to get started. Most of the starter kit price goes into a high quality engine, cars, connectors and transformer. No additional scenery or additional track. These would need to be additional purchases. If you are planning to keep this for a number of years and is not a "throw away" toy, then this is a good choice. (Robert Erdley)

Two measures of locomotive performance were generally applied. At first, locomotives were rated by tractive effort.

My husband and I bought this for our 4 year old son for Christmas, and he loves it. I wouldn't recommend it for younger kids normally, but our son has experience with other Lionel trains, and knows they need to be played with carefully. He asked for a Caterpillar Train for Christmas after seeing one at Toys R Us, but after reading online reviews, I decided to get one that would be compatible with our other track and cars. We use the train with Fast Track, which is much more durable than the old metal track. The transformer works smoothly, and it has a nice whistle sound. It comes with 2 high quality die cast Cat crawler loaders to haul on a flatcar. (Neil Ehlers)

My brother in-law sent this. This is the newest in a series of bright-colored, sturdy Christmas trains drawn by an Atlantic locomotive that actually smokes.
